2) this HUM transformed into Vajrasattva,  this Vajrasattva is bright and shining,  as if the brightness of 1000-sun light from the snow mountain;

3) Vajrasattva blessings your body, the negative karmic energy in your body is purified, thus also the karma of the three lower realms – that is: hell, hungry ghosts and animal realms.  Now we begin the  chanting of the 100-Syallable Mantra, as you are chanting, the Vajrasattva is blessing your body (please refer p.38 of the book for the wording). - [chanting of 100-Syallable Mantra…]

与善知识对话(2) [Dialogue with my Spiritual Friend (2)]

Dialogue with my Spiritual Friend (2): Living & Dying
One day the student felt the flimsy of life & death thus asked the Master:
Student: How could a person passed away (dying) without pain & sufferings?
Master: Practice Great Perfection method (Dzogchen, Vajrayana)?
Student: Why did Master recommend this practice?
Master: My Root Lama, Lodoe Gyatso while (physically) healthy announced His passing away after a week.
Student: Inconceivable?
Master: But within the one week, My Root Lama, Lodoe Gyatso taught Dharma & transmit the Great Perfection teachings everyday, urging us to ask questions.
Student: Your Master (Root Lama) was not common human being?
Master: Master is a great Bodhisattva!
Student: Though I had taken refuge to the Three Jewels many years, but have not practice much in mental cultivation. Moreover,  taking refuge with Master only a few years, can I learn to practice Great Perfection?
Master: You start by doing the Four Practices! Do it gradually.
Student: What if I died before I could complete the Four Practices (10 thousands each practice)?
Master: Won’t go to the Three Lower Realms, don’t worry!

Live Story from the Oral Tradition (13) – Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche (Doptal), HH Pema Kalsang & Lodoe Gyatso

Posted by Sonam Yeshi

Chat with H.E. Kunde Rinpoche (herein address as Tulku) with sonam yeshi (his student) . Last Sept 2011, there was a chat regarding Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche posted in http://dzogpachenpo.wordpress.com.  The linked page:

http://dzogpachenpo.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/live-story-from-the-oral-tradition-7-%e2%80%93-kyabje-patrul-rinpoche-doptal/

[The name of Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche was extracted from page x, “Dedication”, A Garland of Flowers: Questions and Answers on the Highly Secret Clear Light Great Perfection / H.E. Kunde Rinpoche].

Reflecting on the previous chat post, there were some important questions that I might have missed out, thus recently when we discussed different traditions in deciding the Head of Vajrayana tradition, sonam yeshi chat with H.E. Kunde Rinpoche on the subject.

Q= sonam yeshi, A=Kunde Rinpoche, HH = Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche, Bracket ( ) – notes added for clarity, [ ] – expression

Q: Tulku, some questions i might miss out of  last live chat with la of Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche (‘The Words of My Perfect Teacher” - Kunzang Lama’i Shelung, and is regarded a Tibetan Buddhism Classics.) Who had recognized his reincarnation this life in Tibet?

A: H.H.Pema Kalsang (Kyabje). The Abbot of Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery (Tibet).

Q: Tulku la, how was it happened

A:  The present life Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche was born and initially received monastic training in Gelukpa tradition. He became the most intelligent and learned Geshe among the 3 Gelukpa famous Monastery Colleges in Tibet.

Q: Wow, what an inspiring Bodhicitta motivation! Amazing, how was he being ‘discovered’?

A: It is a traditional practice to debate the Buddha’s Teachings in Vajrayana School (in Tibet?). Sometimes, the regarded highest learned practitioner like to seek other (tradition) learned practitioner to debate.

Q: [Uhuh] mm…
A: That time, somehow HH chose Dzogchen Sriseng Monastery to seek debate with the Master of this Monastery.

Q: Why?
A: Dzogchen Sriseng Monastery is a historical and the authority in Dzogchen (famous Monastery), it provides intense Dzogchen training for practitioners for centuries (once published, please refer the Dzogchen History written by Kunde Rinpoche).

Q: Then, who had win the debate?
A: You see, before he could reach Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery (Tibet), that one day HH Pema Kalsang dreamt of Magon [correction on 1 Oct. 12] (please refer the book ‘A garland of flowers by Kunde Rinpoche ‘s Root Lama Lodoe Gyatso’s picture - the most front Dharma Protector.  Its name also called ‘Ekajati’). This Dzogchen Dharma Protector delivered the message of a special visitor “someone with big ears and not tall” (
耳朵大大, 个子矮小) would be coming to Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery tomorrow. In the dream, the incarnation of Patrul Rinpoche was recognized.

Q: What did HH Pema Kalsang do?
A: (after the dream) HH Pema Kalsang suddenly annouced that there would be a Dzogchen Empowerment tomorrow (The next day).

Q: Wow, why must HH Pema Kalsang performed such Empowerment?
A: When HH arrived at Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery, his intention was to seek debate, but such spiritual event had been arranged and just happened, he had to attend (traditionally, it was not polite to leave for any reason?)

Q: i found this spiritually humorous!
A: [smile] thus HH gone through the Empowerment instead, and His reincarnation also been announced in the Monastery.

Q: then, what did the Monastery do for him?

A: HH has to go through the Nyingma School training of Khenpo, including the Great Perfection practice.

Q: Though HH was already a Geshe la?
A:  Yes, but Kyabje completed the training much earlier because He did not need to learn Madhyamaka (
中观) and the Heart Sutra (心经).

Q: How long did HH received the Khenpo tranining and Dzogchen transmission?
A: About 5-6 years (normal training usually need 9 years). But for Dzogchen practice (meditation practices) He learned under Lodoe Gyatso.

Q: (apologetic to Tulku, sorry, Tulku la) Why was Lodoe Gyatso?
A:  My root Lama, Lodoe Gyatso was the 40th in the lineage of transmission of Lama Yangtig of the Highly Secret Clear Light Great Perfection. He is also HH Pema Kalsang (Rinpoche) root Lama in Dzogchen.  His first student Bano Wangtrul (please refer earlier post at dzogpazenpo.wordpress.com) is currently a famous Dzogchen practitioner in Tibet (His current age is more than 80 years old?).

Q: Where is Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche now?

A: After he completed the required training and transmission, Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche was invited to teach Dzogchen, at 五明佛学院 (色达县喇荣)(English) Buddhist College Monastery (Qinghai) by Khenpo Tsultim Lodo Rinpoche 慈诚罗珠仁波切 (the student of His Holiness, Khenpo Jikme Phuntsok Rinpoche) as there are many thousands of Lamas at that monastery. Currently, He is teaching Dzogchen (Great Perfection practice) in that Monastery.

Q: Wow, it is significant for any Monastery to be able to invite him

A: Yes, many lamas would come to learn, then the monastery need much more supports for those lamas, thus it needs the favourable conditions.

Q: Tulku la, Thank you very much, For sharing this live story of Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche, his relations with HH Pema Kalsang and root Lama Lodoe Gyatso, and Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery!

Live Story from the Oral Tradition (7) – Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche (Doptal)

Posted by Sonam Yeshi Live Story from the Oral Tradition (7) – Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche (Doptal)

The name of Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche was extracted from page x, “Dedication”,  A Garland of Flowers: Questions and Answers on the Highly Secret Clear Light Great Perfection / H.E. Kunde Rinpoche; Translated by Geshe Lhakdor and Dr. Chok Tenzin Monlam, p.x ].

Chat with H.E. Kunde Rinpoche (herein address as Tulku) with Sonam Yeshi (his student) sometime in early 2011, and in August 2011 after his translated manuscript was published.

Q= sonam yeshi, A=Kunde Rinpoche, HH = Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche, Bracket ( ) - notes added for clarity, [ ] - expression

Q: Tulku, I wanna asked you some questions related to the famous Patrul Rinpoche, but have reservation as my direct speech may sound impolite most times (at least to lay people). Historically, Patrul Rinpoche  composed this book, translated to English is  The Words of My Perfect Teacher ‘(Kunzang Lama’i Shelung), and is regarded a Tibetan Buddhism Classics by non-Tibetan readers. I have this book recommended by Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche in 1995, and personally I believe this text had been very inspiring and is still emanating much inspirations to countless people (Buddhists) as a concise systematic guide/text in Vajrayana Buddhism, especially Nyingma School?
A: Yes, it is a text recommended for reading for practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism. It is well known among Tibetan Buddhist Lamas and teachers.

Q: Tulku, no offence (Khenpo, once reminded us the ‘monk’’s robe represents human enlightenment (the Buddha). Last year (or 2009?), one day a thought arose in me: had this Great Teacher reincarnated? In this ICT age, naturally the most convenient tool is Internet, Search Engine. Thus I google this name, and incidentally I retrieved the top recalls in the list at that Search Engine. one young look Lama with the same name, his site was written in English, there is a nice poem written in English for his students. I was very ‘straight forward’, with joy, I thought I had a surprised discovery, and wrote in my blog and put a link to his website at that time.  Later, I visited that site a few times and read, but started to feel I need to verify this same name (I amended it after seeking verification ).

A: you meant a young Lama? We know there are about six (6) Lamas in Tibet are having this name!  The present Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche does not speak nor write English!(his age range within 50' - apology, cannot remember exactly after lapsed of time to this post - sonam yeshi)

Q: Huh, SIX?! [naïve me, nearly fell off my chair!!!] what a fool of me!
A: It is natural, human nature (to associate even adopted the name of well known teacher). No problem, if their spiritual practice is as high as Patrul Rinpoche (没有问题,如果他们的修行与巴珠仁波切一样高) [smile].
Q:
Has Patrul Rinpoche chose his reincarnation? Where is this genius now?
A:
yes, now, Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche, is a great Khenpo in Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery (Tibet). He taught Dzogchen practise (Great Perfection) to the Lamas learning & training In the Monastery.

Q: Who is/was HH present life's root Lama?
A:
We have the same root Lama, Ladoe Gyatso.

(Note:  please refer page 10 of the above-mentioned Tulku’s publication, translated from Tibetan to English)

Q: Are you closed to HH?
A: yes. Umm, I spent one week of meditation retreat in the cave he stayed before near Dzogchen Monastery. Also, he care for me much, he had given me a copy of this book (The Words of My Perfect Teacher, in Tibetan)

Q: Can I have a look at it?
A: I have given it to Yeshe Rinpoche (another Rinpoche who studied, practised in Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery also)

Q: oh dear, what a precious gift! - and... (practise of exchange? or true friendship?)
A: [smile] precious, yes, but that's a gift of altruistic joy!

Q: then, where is Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche now, still in Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery?
A: He was invited to teach Dzogchen, at 五明佛学院(?)College Monastery (Qinghai) by Khenpo Tsultim Lodo Rinpoche 慈诚罗珠仁波切 (the student of His Holiness, Khenpo Jikme Phuntsok Rinpoche) as there are many thousands of Lamas at that monastery.  Currently, He is teaching Dzogchen (Great Perfection practice) in that Monastery.

Q: do you foresee one day Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche will return to his original Monastery to continue teaching?
A: [smile] (no answer)

Q: Tulku, could you associate something of this newly published book (A Garland of Flowers: Questions and Answers on the Highly Secret Clear Light Great Perfection) with HH (Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche)?
A: During his previous life, after he had written kunzang lama’I shelung (The Words of My Perfect Teacher’, in Tibetan) manuscript, the community did not treasure and see its importance as a guide text to Dzogchen Practice, only until after he 'went off' (physical body dissolved)!
(forgot to ask, may be the rare one - the 5th Dzogchen Rinpoche? Related to earlier post of Him sent a Lama to provide writing tools for Patrul Rinpoche) {-this sentence seems to have deep meaning to me, - sonam yeshi}

Q: [speechless] sounded like Art History, a famous artist master piece work yet appreciation dawn after the disappearance of the Artist!
A: [smile] I am a cave man 我是山洞人![laughter]

Q: Tulku, oh…no…[impressed by his simple, humble and child-like demeanours!]
Thank you very much, For sharing this live story of Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche  and his relations with Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery!

Live Story from the Oral Tradition (5) - Choktul Karde Rinpoche

Posted by sonam yeshi
Chat with H.E. Kunde Rinpoche (herein address as Tulku) in 2010 & 2011, before the opening ceremony of Dzogchen Samten Chokling Centre, and after the manuscript he spent 10 years (or more?) to write was translated, finally published!.
Q= sonam yeshi, A=Kunde Rinpoche, HH = Choktul Karde Rinpoche, Bracket ( ) - notes added for clarity, [ ] - expression

Q: Tulku, from your manuscript on author's biography (initial translation was posted in 2009 at this blog), HH seems to have very closed connection with you in spiritual life and Bodhicitta inspiration (for 3 generations!)
A: yes, in the historical record of Horthang Tashi Monastery, he was the Rinpoche recognized Dringtul Kunde Rinpoche past and present while he was 6 six years old this life.

Q: Tulku, from the historical picture he had taken with you at that age (please refer to this blog), he was wearing lay clothes just as youself at that age. why?
A: yes, umm, at that period of years, all Rinpoches also wore lay clothes.

Q:Tulku, i am curious of the speciality of his meditation practice, among the methods stated in your translated manuscript (now published :A Garland of Flowers: Questions and Answers on the Highly Secret Clear Light Great Perfection / H.E. Kunde Rinpoche; Translated by Geshe Lhakdor and Dr. Chok Tenzin Monlam. ISBN: 978-967-10552-0-5)
A: In Horthang Tashi Monastery and the district area, HH is well known for his Phowa practice (please refer Q. no.23, p. 48).

Q:  Tulku, could you kindly share one special incident that could really 'surprised' our unclear mind comparatively to this teaching and practice?
A: There was one time someone in the district passed away and requested HH to perform Phowa at the deceased house by her (?)relative.  But HH was very busy on that day with the monastery as that house was quite a distant away from the Horthang Tashi Monastery.

Q: Then, could he just reject with that reason?
A: When the family insisted HH should go and help this, HH informed the family that he would perform the Phowa in Horthang Tashi Monastery.

Q: Tulku, to our cultural practice, usually the prayer would be carried out in front of the deceased. Does it works effectively with otherwise?
A: HH said to them he could do it in the Monastery without travelling to their house.

Q: then, what happen?
A: As the deceased relative insisted, HH said that if you all did not believe, looked at the deceased head top at 3.00A.M. (15:00hrs) on such a day (next day?).

Q:  Oh dear, sounded like chinese Kungfu high Qikung master in the movie! What happened? [very curious]
A: At the stated time, the deceased head 'burst' from the top!

Q: [speechless for a while] Sounded unbelievable and real esoteric!!!
A: yes, even this family members were shocked to see the happening! -But very joyful.

Q: sorry, Tulku, just curious, could you do the same?
A: (silence) [smile and laughter] - (later humbly said 'no') .
(but instead Tulku reminded me that appearance of psychic power iitself does not bring human enlightenment, many meditator of other religion such as Hinduism also record such psychic ability! - out of topic)

Thus have i heard...posted by sonam yeshi.

Note: with my mind still uncultivated, unmindful and unaware, Tulku's silence signifies i am not ready for the answers? After Tulku's book published, i learned from him that Phowa is also a Great Perfection practice, a very special meditation required instruction from specialize Dzogchen Master in Phowa practice, and it is not meant for beginners in Meditation and without going through all the Foundations practice stated in A Garland of Flowers: Questions and Answers on the Highly Secret Clear Light Great Perfection,Q.1-Q.19 (p11-p.37). - sonam yeshi

[8/24/2011 5:46:48 PM] :BTW - Tulku's book. Why need to sell so expensive?
[8/24/2011 5:47:23 PM] :Sorry to say that but if your wish to generate profit from books, it's pretty slim chance.
.....
[8/24/2011 5:49:07 PM] - we have did some 'market' research on prices about dzogchen practice book - the price also reflects its uniqe teaching. profit is secondary. it probably can sell better in the west (cos' of more dzogchen pratitioners?)
[8/24/2011 5:50:22 PM] - if you read this book, it is unique, even i find part 2 & 3 difficult to understand
[8/24/2011 5:51:45 PM] : only real practicetioner will buy. Non practicetioner will not understand the depth of the book. Let me share with you, Taiwanese Rinpoche also translated a practice book for sales. But he make a comment "As this is practice books, usually Centre will buy one book and makes copies after that" so the books cant sell if go for printing"
[8/24/2011 5:53:08 PM]: As Tulku book only 100pages (xiv, ill.; 128), to buy a book and send for copy is not a difficult task.
[8/24/2011 5:54:46 PM] - the illustrations - the peaceful & wrathful 100 buddhas (deities) & his great master - Lodoe Gyatso made phtotocopying impossible
[8/24/2011 5:55:32 PM] - also the 100 buddhas is the only piece of illustration known by tulku which has all in one piece of art.
[8/24/2011 5:58:56 PM] - the idea/inspiration was from the Rinpche (forgot the name in the book) who had 'passed away' - credit given by his Lama. and this lama is planning to build a monastery in India under his name (at South India near Dzogchen Monastery), from the narration, this Rinpoche is coming back to continue his work. thus, later we may have to contribute based on book sales
[8/24/2011 6:02:33 PM] - i think to buy this book itself is a blessing - one of my friends a christian, diagnosed with cancer before, and immune system down. plus both parents sick off and on... (father diagnosed with cancer also) but she seems have affinity with Tulku's 'mani' & blessings. Lakely got bronchitis, i brought Tulku to see her - she bought the book, and reported that night itself her lungs' ribs pain subsiding & recovering well (even weeks of medicine didnt work for her)! - believe it or not :-D)

[8/24/2011 6:03:40 PM] : I can understand the important and precious of the contents. If the idea is to reach a bigger audience and readers then it should be made affordable to all and not only to the needy/medical conditions readers
[8/24/2011 6:10:29 PM] - haha, thanks for concerns over distributions/sales. i see Tulku such confident over his book (one westerner, former translator of Dzogchen rinpoche even 'advise' him not to publish his book - cos it will make him 'famous' but he worries of 'abuse' of this reveals of all the secret teachings thus far only in Tibetan - except 1-2 practice had been translated to english. i did read some books review with the title name dzogchen from scholarly database, this is the only complete manual of dzogchen pratice!!!
[8/24/2011 6:14:00 PM] - Thus i can imagine why the 7th Dzogchen Rinpoche (verbally) supported to be published. Thanks to HH Pema Kalsang immediately wrote Words of Praise upon reading his manuscript
[8/24/2011 6:14:50 PM] : Ok. Your may have different strategy on the sales of the book. Just hope its well accepted and having the 2nd print very soon.
[8/24/2011 6:15:27 PM] : ok. Chat again other time
[8/24/2011 6:17:18 PM] - bye (yn)

Live Story of the Oral Tradition (1) - LODOE GYATSO (1930-2001)

Chat with H.E. Kunde Rinpoche - Sonam Yeshi. Transcribed in Q&A format (herein address as Tulku) in July 2011

Note: The name of Master Lodoe Gyatso was initially translation to English as Golok A-kong Tokden Rinpoche in this blog by Karma Khenpo and Jangchub Dorje (Lama).  After seeking clarification from Kunde Rinpoche, "Golok" is the geographical place of Master's home/monastery.  A cross-reference check on other translated text in Chinese translation, 'Lodoe' (罗珠) is more consistent translation - sonam yeshi, 29 August 2011

Q= sonam yeshi, A=Kunde Rinpoche, Bracket ( ) - notes added for clarity, [ ] - expression

Q: When did you commissioned the art work of your root Lama (Dzogchen Master), Lodoe Gyatso which was inserted as an illustration in your newly published book, First page (A Garland of Flowers: Questions and Answers on the Highly Secret Clear Light Great Perfection/ H.E. Kunde Rinpoche; Translated by Geshe Lhakdor and Dr. Chok Tenzin Monlam.ISBN: 978-967-10552-0-5).
A: In year 2009, at Nepal by an artist.

Q: Can you elaborate on its original idea?
A: I described my ideas and outline of the illustrations to the artist: My root Lama in the middle, the Three Dharma Protectors, and Samantabhadra (空心佛) on utmost top, and scene of surrounding.

Q: How special is your root Lama in the Dzogchen lineage?
A: He had teach and educated (in Khenpo training) /transmit teachings of Dzogchen, and taught many lamas in Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery on Great Perfection practice, many became ‘attained’, very well known Dzogchen Teachers in this century. Among his prominently well-known students are: H.H.Khenpo Jikme Phuntsok 法王堪布吉美彭措仁波切 (the Master of Khenpo Sotaji (索达吉堪布) & Tsultim Lodu (慈诚罗珠仁波切), and the living H.H. Kyabje Pema Kalsang Rinpoche and Kyabje Patrul Rinpoche (Doptal) of Shriseng Monastery in Tibet.

Q: Any ‘esoteric’ or spiritual story about him? Most critical life experience, like how he passed away?
A: [laughter] uh, many many. Yes, 2 weeks before he passed away, he announced to his students, and requested them to ask questions. Thereafter, every morning he gave dharma talks on Great Perfection and asked us for questions. When his physical body (the 5 elements) started to diminishing (dissolved) to emptiness, without any verbal communication, Kyabje Pema Kalsang Rinpoche arrived just on time to complete his Bodhisattva Vow (to do the special Puja & before the physical elements ‘erupted’,do the necessary according to the teaching tradition (apology - that is out of the transcriber's ability to describe in words).

Q: hey, Tulku, it is just beyond our rational mind of such ‘Art of Dying’ [laughter], lay people & new student to Dzogchen tradition like us. We had witnessed so many sufferings of our loved ones, friends, neighbours etc. dying in many difficult, unexpected & confused stages…
A: [laughter] it sounded very spiritual, but there were many extra-ordinary ‘passing away’ real live evidences in Tibet Buddhism history. Spiritual life is the quintessence of the Tibetan culture (and hope it is preserving well).

Q: Has Master taken rebirth?
A: Yes, in Tibet.

Q: How was this incarnation been recognized?
A: Master had left his written description (predicted) of his rebirth, based on those descriptions, a search was carried out.

Q: Any special ‘signals’or description in the prediction given?
A: Yes, one of these was the geographic district name, another one was the physical birth mark - there would be birthmark of a dharma protector, and he chose to be born in a common family (普通家庭).

Q: Wow, I think any of us would choose a ‘rich or wealthy’ family if we have a choice [laughter]!
A: Yes, my Master is very special - it reflects the essence of Great Compassion of my root Lama’s, Lodoe Gyatso
Q: I am curious, which great Master has recognized him [laughter]?
A: Kyabje Pema Kalsang from Dzogchen Shriseng Monastery, and another one by ... Rinpoche (one of Master's former closed disciples - apology, sonam yeshi cannot remember that Rinpoche’s name mentioned by Tulku)

Q: wow, incarnate to two individuals?
A: [laughter] (Tulku didn’t answer, may be the answer is too deep for words description, or it is beyond my limited and always confused mind’s understanding - sonam yeshi)...

Thank you Tulku, i am such blessed to have opportunities to chat with you, and learning from your humane actions.

Tashi Delek
